The first week or so of a cruise From Australia to Hong Kong in January 2012 took me to these ports in Australia. I arrived in Brisbane with a day to spare and met an internet friend before sailing off. We had a nice visit along the riverbank and I was favorably impressed with Brisbane.
The other four Australian ports, frankly, weren't that interesting. Hamilton and Green Islands were huge mega-tourist developments where we were cheek-by-jowl with hordes of other tourists: prices were sky-high, sights to see were OK–pleasant enough places for a few hours. I managed to get into the water on Green Island where lots of people were decked out in full wet suits because of the jellyfish that'll kill you (didn't see any). Townsville was rainy and foggy–lots of ambiance but not much to see other than the aquarium. Thursday Island was an unscheduled port–a substitute for a cancelled stop in Port Moresby, New Guinea, where the natives were demonstrating. Since the Thursday Islanders didn't know we were coming, they continued their Saturday life in their usual way and most everything was closed. Though I did get a rather unusual passport stamp and a check-off on my bucket list with the stop.
I was happy enough just to be sailing on the Spirit of Adventure.
